Trademark applications for NFT, Metaverse, and Crypto rise in 2022: Report

A total of 1078 applications were filed for NFTs, 604 were filed for crypto, and 759 were for the Metaverse

The number of trademarks filed concerning NFTs, Web3, Metaverse, and Cryptocurrencies since January 2022 has surged the total number recorded in 2021.

In new data curated by intellectual property lawyer Mike Kondoudis on Tuesday, he reported that individuals and businesses filed over 3600 trademark applications with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for cryptocurrencies and crypto-related services as of August 31. The total for the entirety 2021 was 3516.

Kondoudis also reported that the number of NFT applications has surged to more than 5800 as compared to 2087 applications in 2021. The number of trademark applications for Metaverse or Web3 has doubled to 4150 from 1866 in 2021.

The Data from the report shows that March was the biggest month for filing applications across NFT, crypto, and the Metaverse. The months that recorded the lowest trademark application in 2022 were the months of July and August.

It was also reported recently that popular designer brand Hermes has also filed a trademark application in the United States for the use of its name in the Metaverse, NFT, and Cryptocurrencies. The brand also has a lawsuit against Mason Rothschild the founder of Metabirkins for allegedly selling NFTs bearing their Birkin name.

Other notable brands that have made filings in 2022 include MasterCard, Formula One, Mcdonald’s, Meta, U.S Space Force, and Gatorade. The brands reported their involvement with virtual products and blockchain technology to the USPTO.
